TAIORA Māori Collective
for planet, place & people

We are currently seeking expressions of interest to join the TAIORA collective

WHAT IS THE TAIORA COLLECTIVE?

Taiora is a collective of Māori businesses that came together united by a shared aspiration:
‘To lead a Māori sustainability movement that differentiates Māori brands on the world stage for the benefit of Aotearoa.’

Our core belief:
What is good for planet, place and people is also good for business.

Over the past 18 months, Māori businesses have worked together through wānanga and research to explore how a Māori sustainability movement, collective and global mark might be developed.
Watch this 4min overview video to learn more.

WHO'S INVOLVED?

This kaupapa was initiated by a founding group of pakihi Māori, including Ōku, Mamaku / Ora innovations, Wai Mānuka, Two Islands, Miraka, Tiraki Wines and Awwa & Ehoa.  The kaupapa is currently led by four of the founders; Helen Paul-Smith (Ōku), Joe Harawira (Wai Mānuka), Tessa Davis  (Mamaku Skincare) and Julia Matthews  (Two Islands).

Supported initially by Callaghan Innovation, the founders worked with Karl Wixon of ARAHIA Pathfinders to explore the formation of the collective and development of a globally facing Māori mark. This work led to engagement with the FernMark License Programme and ongoing collaboration with New Zealand Story, New Zealand Trade and Enterprise and Te Puni Kōkiri.

WHAT'S BEING PROPOSED?

Formal establishment of the TAIORA Collective
Establishment of the collective as a formal Māori sustainability alliance, open to any pakihi Māori who wish to join the kaupapa and be part of a collective movement for planet, place and people.
This will be a membership based organisation with a nominal annual fee to support administration of the collective, based on level of business revenue.

It is an opportunity to link with other pakihi Māori, participate in network hui, wānanga, other events and activities.

It is also an opportunity to contribute to, access and utilise a uniquely Māori sustainability model, that will enable you to undertake your own sustainability planning, management and monitoring based on Māori measures of well-being.
Establishment of a TAIORA + FernMark Companion Programme
Establishment of a TAIORA companion mark with the FernMark License programme will be led by TAIORA members.
This will be based on the standard entry criteria and fees associated with membership of the FernMark License programme as well as TAIORA established criteria in regard to evidence of being a Māori business with evidence of embedded sustainability practices and impact.

The TAIORA collective will manage the requirements associated with this specific programme, including assessment of applicants for fit.

This approach retains rangatiratanga of the collective and kaupapa Māori aligned with Article 2 rights of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, whilst partnering with the government as our Tiriti partner for the operation and promotion of the programme.
